DOMESTIC ABUSE PROJECT OF DELAWARE COUNTY NAMES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County (DAP) has appointed Michelle Edwards Brown as executive director effective June 5, 2023. Brown has extensive non-profit leadership experience with organizations focused on mental health, social services, and urban education.

“I’m excited to join with DAP’s staff, volunteers, and community partners to provide critical services to victims of domestic violence while working to prevent abuse through education and outreach programs,” Brown said. “I have a strong commitment and passion for helping others live safe, healthy, and productive lives, and to ensure they receive the support and care necessary.”

Founded in 1976, DAP provides safety, advocacy, and supportive services to victims of domestic abuse. Each year, the organization assists thousands of victims of domestic abuse and their children through a 24/7 hotline, emergency safe housing, counseling, legal services, and advocacy.

Kathy Gaval, vice president of DAP’s board of directors and chair of the search committee, said Brown’s knowledge and record of achievement stood out among a highly qualified pool of candidates.

“In addition to her extensive experience and leadership roles with mission-focused organizations, Michelle brings a true passion for helping others and a commitment to building meaningful partnerships,” Gaval said. “She is skilled with strategic planning, program development, and operations, in addition to a highly successful record of fundraising. We welcome Michelle as the leader of DAP’s dedicated staff at a critical time of rebuilding, reconnecting, and recommitment to serving the victims of domestic violence in Delaware County.”

Brown is currently chief development and communications officer for Independence Mission Schools, a network of 14 elementary schools in Philadelphia. She was previously director of development for Mastery Charter Schools, a network of 24 elementary and secondary schools, and director of The Shops at Devereux, an adult vocational program of Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. A lifelong resident of Delaware County, Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication from St.
Bonaventure University and a master’s degree in non-profit management from Eastern University.

DAP is headquartered in Media with satellite offices in the Chester City and Upper Darby police departments. More information is available on DAP’s website at dapdc.org.
